Conquering Temptation: Capturing Every Thought

"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."

— 2 Corinthians 10:5

"Take every thought captive." That's usually the snippet folks remember. It's neither the start nor the end of the verse.

This is mighty. The context behind this chapter is that Paul is defending his ministry. With defense comes the truth. Because without the Word nothing else said can stand.

That snippet is one of the first pieces of the Word that I learned to memorize. The problem was that I only took it as a mantra for when perverse thoughts entered my mind.

Depending on that day's willpower meter, I would either give in to my temptations of the flesh or would "conquer it." The conquering part was rare.

We Need Understanding, Not Just Knowledge

To truly take in this verse we need to ask God for understanding. Knowledge without understanding is misleading. And only the Holy Spirit can grant that understanding.

"For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding." — Proverbs 2:6

The Key: "...to Obey Christ"

The key piece of taking every thought captive is the last three words: "...to obey Christ."

You need to understand the gravity of who Christ is. He is the Word — here since the beginning (John 1:1–3).

The Word is not just a book. It's God's breath. It's the instruction for how the universe sparked into existence. It's also a mighty sword.

Trace back one verse further:

"For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds." — 2 Corinthians 10:4

God is revealing that this physical, fleshy fight we have every day — the one we hate but somehow keep going back to — is not of the flesh. What is being fought in the flesh has already been a spiritual battle.

Fight Back with the Word

You take every thought captive by speaking the Word of God.

Feeling anxiety, fear, or worry? Speak the Word right back at those thoughts.

Speak out loud: "According to 2 Timothy 1:7, God did not give me a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, love, and self-control."

Then go into a posture of prayer:

"Thank you, Lord, that you have freed me and I am no longer a slave to sin but a slave to righteousness. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I know the truth and the truth has set me free."

These are the ways to take every single thought captive. Because if a thought goes against the Word of God and who God says you are — it is a lie. And you will not operate in lies, because lies are from the enemy.

"The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy." — John 10:10

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." — Ephesians 6:12

The Holy Spirit Doesn't Leave You Alone

The great thing about God is that he didn't leave us alone in this fight. You don't have to beat yourself up for not remembering a verse. The more you read, the more the Word gets imprinted on your heart. The Holy Spirit will bring it up when you need it most.

Start reading the Word. Kill every opinion that goes against what Jesus said — immediately — by using his Word.

"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." — Hebrews 4:12

Jesus Showed Us How

Even Jesus was tempted at his most vulnerable — after 40 days and nights of fasting. Three times the enemy came. Three times Jesus replied with the Word alone. He did not entertain or debate. He resisted, and the enemy fled.

"Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." — James 4:7

Resist the devil and he shall flee. This can only happen by using the Word. Make sure you are reading and nurturing that relationship with God daily. If we stopped drinking water we would be dehydrated. The Word fills and gives life more than any food ever could.
